Working with Children at Dr Brasanac Dental Practice

Our
dental practice has a reputation of being child friendly. We
especially look forward to seeing and working with children
at our practice. It is usually a pleasant experience for our
small patients.
In
line with worldwide dental recommendations, children should
be brought in by their parents for the initial check-up when
they are three and a half to four years old. In the majority
of cases there would be no dental work performed at that
appointment, it’s mainly for familiarisation. We do not open
a file on a child on that occasion but help them to get to
know the surroundings and feel comfortable, which we
consider extremely important.
If
the child doesn’t mind sitting in the chair on their first
visit, we give them a little ride around, show them the
light tool, the water jet, the air jet and any other things
they might find interesting. We then count their teeth, talk
to them for a little while and often give them a little
something as a present. All this is for free and our aim is
for the first few visits to be conducted without performing
any actual work. In this way the children form a favourable
picture of a visit to the dentist as something
non-threatening and possibly even fun. Once that impression
is achieved it is much easier to continue.
It
is not advisable to wait until a child gets toothache before
bringing them to the practice. We would of course help the
child but the whole process is a lot more traumatic for them
and our work is harder if thy are already in pain. This is
why we would always recommend the principle of
familiarisation first as it is a lot more positive and
acceptable to all.
Important! Milk teeth are almost as important as the
permanent ones and this is why it is very important to make
sure children brush their teeth from an early age, with the
parents’ help to start with and later on by themselves.
Teeth should be brushed every morning before breakfast,
every evening before going to bed and also preferably after
eating sweets.
We
would show the child how to properly brush their teeth on
their first visit. It is good to follow the above advice and
not to scare the child with stories about dentists, as that
can cause fear and repulsion in them. Our aim is to ensure
the good health, happiness and beautiful smiles of your
children!
